For this book, Shizue Okawa, an illustrator, drew her designs for the animals and her 85-year-old mother Hisako crocheted them just by following the drawings. Hisako crochets lightning fast, but occasionally she stops to check the size of the animal by comparing it to her daughter’s design. The length of the arms and legs, or the body shape of the finished animals is always different, but that just makes them all the more unique. It’s not
necessary to follow the pattern for each animal exactly. Enjoy making your own long-legged friends with whatever stripes, spots, and colors you’d like.
